Pran's Daughter Pinky Bhalla Sends a Picture With Dad To Clear Rumors

‘Pran is talking, walking and smiling too’ Says Daughter Pinky Bhalla, agitated with rumors of his death.

Veteran actor Pran, was admitted to Mumbai's Lilavati hospital following breathing problem. After investigation, it was found that he suffered from pneumonia. Pran's daughter Pinky speaking to Mumbai Mirror said that her father was now stable and is doing fine.

Though still weak, the 92-year-old actor was seen walking around the corridors of Mumbai's Lilavati hospital even as rumours about his death flooded social media. “My father is feeling much better. He just needs to get a bit stronger, which is why he is still in the hospital. He is talking, his memory is super, his chest congestion has almost cleared,” daughter Pinky Bhalla has said.

Amitabh Bachchan Posts Granddaughter Aaradhya Bachchan's 1st Birthday Pictures

Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's daughter Aaradhya, who turned one on November 16, was surrounded by her doting parents and grandparents on her first birthday.

Amithab Bachchan posted on his social networking site : " we have stepped out for a day to celebrate the 1st birthday of our little one - Aaradhya ! It seems like just the other day we were all centered around the hospital corridor, waiting patiently for the news of the birth to come in, of the tough natural labor that Aishwarya was going through, and finally the hour of birth and the general excitement that followed. How an entire year has gone by is not known to us, but it has and has satisfactorily. God has been kind and gentle and we thank the Almighty for giving us this joy bundled as it were in soft and cradled condition."

While Amitabh Bachchan gifted the toddler a Mini Cooper on the occasion, he also tweeted pictures of Aaradhya with her actor parents, happily posing as the birthday celebrations progressed in the background.

Interview: Boman Irani And His Son Kayoze Irani Say They Are More Friends Than Father and Son

An Interview With Boman Irani And His Son Kayoze Irani

He has a dad who is more buddy than parent. “There are times when I call him Boman. Of course, he doesn’t like it, but I get away with it, like I do with most things,” laughs Kayoze Irani. “Shut up!” Boman Irani says to him, then spins to us and requests politely, “Please don’t listen to everything he says. This affable kid is completely crazy.”

The camaraderie between one of Bollywood’s finest actors Boman Irani and his younger son Kayoze Irani, who made his film debut last month with Student of the Year (SOTY), is palpable as the two poke cutlery placed on a table at a Bandra five-star coffee shop, into each other’s eyes when they disagree, and silently nod when they agree. The 24-year-old may not share his father’s opinion on most matters, but he does mirror his dry sense of humour, as the two tumble into their own little, private conversations right in the middle of the interview.

But things are different when the actors are at work. On the sets of Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu (EMAET), Kayoze was assisting director Shakun Batra, while Boman was playing Imran Khan’s father. “Back then, he was strictly ‘Boman sir’,” says Kayoze. “Only once the shoot was over, and we’d go out for dinner or a round of gambling, that we’d have a gala time. All my friends from Dharma Productions (producers of SOTY) are his friends too.”

In fact, it was on the sets of EMAET that producer Karan Johar spotted the young man and offered him the role of the competitive geek, Kaizad Sodabottleopenerwalla aka Pseudo. “I told Karan, I don’t know how to act, and he said, ‘Don’t worry, you have the genes’,” remembers Kayoze, whose performance received a thumbs up from audiences and critics. “My only concern was that Karan didn’t want him to lose weight. That frightened me,” says Boman. “Dad, he wanted me to stay the way I am — fit and fine,” Kayoze jumps in.

“I wanted Kayo to understand that acting is like any other job. Until recently, he was an assistant on a short film. He must continue to work as assistant director until he acts in yet another film. You mustn’t exit the grind; you can’t turn away other experiences just because you have turned into an actor,” says Boman, who has over a decade of experience in a career he took on at 44 after working as a professional photographer.

It was only natural that Kayoze would approach Boman for advice. The climax run of SOTY, where an inebriated Pseudo breaks down and fights with the dean (played by Rishi Kapoor) after the students fall out and the winner refuses to accept the coveted trophy, was a challenge, he admits. “I don’t know how that shoot would have gone had I not reached out to him,” he says. But Boman insists he wouldn’t tell his son, or any other actor, how to act. “That is the director’s job. All I told him was that he must learn his lines so well that they tumble out of his mouth irrespective of what is happening around him. And he should understand the where, why, when, what and how of his character and scene.”

The advice worked well. Boman, who was shooting a promotion for Ferrari ki Sawari in Film City at the time, received a text from Rishi Kapoor that read, “Time for you to retire”. “When I walked in, everyone congratulated me. It was a proud moment,” beams Boman. “He did that difficult scene in one take. Nothing outstanding can ‘just’ happen. It happens because you have your basics right.”

The film industry has brought the Iranis not just accolades but luxurious comforts. Kayoze admits life changed after his father bagged film after big film. “But as a father, he never changed. It was difficult to fathom his fan following post Munna Bhai…When I was little, dad was always famous, no matter what job he did. As I grew older and mature, I realised what ‘famous’ meant.”

“Did you just call yourself mature?” teases Boman. And suddenly they turn into buddies; pals who are on PlayStation (FIFA) every night, with his mother Zenobia playing ‘bookie’. “She’ll send me a text saying, ‘Dad is stressed, please let him win’,” laughs Kayoze, before throwing him a challenge.

“Say something genuinely bad about me.” Turning serious, Boman thinks aloud, “I worry about how much these boys spend. I come from a humble background. I think 10 times before making a purchase. These guys are constantly looking for new hardware and phones. Do they know how much an iPhone costs? I doubt.”

“I think four times,” quips Kayoze. “My brother Danesh got me the iPhone.” Boman says he has shared three principles with his kids — don’t be beimaan (fraudulent) with money, work and your personal life, be positive and loving. “You can get away with so much if you are genuinely affectionate. I guess that’s why Kayo gets away with mischief,” smiles the father.

Saif Ali Khan Talks About His Children's Presence at His Wedding With Kareena.

Ibrahim held the ring, Sara held the garlands. Kareena and I wanted them to - Saif Ali Khan.

In his first post-shaadi interview, the Saif talks of Kareena and how his kids were an integral part of the wedding ceremonies.

How easy is it for the children? At the back of your mind, somewhere, you'll have the question: How comfortable are they going to be? Did you have to handle any awkward silences?
In a modern relationship today, you have these situations which are not textbook. But if there's love and understanding, people grow together, grow comfortable. If it wasn't a comfortable situation, comfortable enough - the fact that they were there at the wedding, and quite happy to be there, says it all. And they played quite an important part in the wedding. Ibrahim held the ring for me, Sara held the garlands. I wanted them, and Kareena wanted them, to be very much a part of things. That was something that we had worked our way towards in our relationship.

We keep talking about India being very traditional and full of these old world values while more and more people are raped and things like that. We need to accept the fact that we're not all that traditional anymore. First of all, we're human. The most correct relationships in the most perfect kind of setup can also end in complete disaster. You're better off giving it a shot where people actually love each other. And people should understand that.

An Interview With Shashi Kapoor’s Son Kunal Kapoor

The loss-making Prithvi Theatre has survived 35 years due to the passion of Shashi Kapoor and his family’s commitment to his father Prithviraj Kapoor’s dream of having a home for theatre. It is therefore no surprise that theatre groups consider it their home. Shashi’s son Kunal Kapoor, 53, talks to TOI ahead of Prithvi’s 30th year festival that begins November 3 in Mumbai. Scroll down for Excerpts from the interview with Shashi Kapoor’s first Son Kunal Kapoor:

Passion apart, what makes you continue to run a loss making Prithvi Theatre for the past 35 years?
It’s a philosophy and a way of thinking that both Sanjana and I inherited from our parents. Running the theatre gives us happiness, regardless of whether we make money out of it or not. Naseeruddin Shah, who also performed at the first Prithvi festival in 1977, recently said that in between, he had a little scrap with us due to which he moved away. Then, when we made up, he said it was like coming back home. He kept using that word ‘coming back home’ and I love that because the love we get from all our theatre groups and our audience makes the loss worthwhile. Last year, we combined the men and ladies loos to make the ladies’ loo a little larger and shifted the men’s loo to the opposite side. Out of habit, the men automatically used to walk into the ladies’ loo as they were used to the men’s loo being there, so we had to post security to ensure they wouldn’t do so. We are happy that even after 35 years, we are here promoting commercial theatre, have an audience, do 550 shows a year and still don’t rent it out commercially.

How did your parents get into theatre?
Our whole family — both my father’s and my mother’s family — have their roots in and have a passion for theatre. My father (Shashi Kapoor) joined his father’s theatre c o m p a ny Prithvi Raj Kapoor theatre, after school. It used to travel across India to p e r fo r m . During once such tour to Calcutta, my father was performing and my mother was also coincidentally touring and performing with her father’s theatre company when my grandfather had invited them to come and see my father’s show. My father was a teenager at that time and was peeping out of the curtains where he spotted my mother in the audience. Shortly afterwards, my father joined my mother’s father’s company Shakespeareana for a few years till they got married when my mother joined Prithvi Theatre. My mother was acting even when she was eight months pregnant and used to hide her stomach with a pillow. I’ve heard stories of me being breast-fed backstage.

Your mother was an inspiration for Prithvi. Do you and your father miss her presence?
My mother was a lot of fun and she was a source of inspiration, had a great balance and was always positive. It’s been 28 years since she died but I don’t think dad ever completely recovered after her death. She died when she was 50 and he was 46. He could have remarried but for him that was not an option. They were soulmates. Every relationship has its share of problems but their connection was rare and unusually strong.

People usually convert trusts into private property. Your father converted his private property into a trust just for the love of theatre. It’s rare?
Prithviraj Kapoor had a passion for theatre and he supported theatre by acting in films. He used to travel with his theatre company and had a dream to have a home for his theatre group. In 1962, he leased out two plots for ten years from the Bajaj group. On one of the plots, he built the theatre and converted one of the plots to a building opposite which is where we live. It was illogical to build property on a land leased out just for ten years but he insisted that he needed it only for that time. Exactly ten years later, in 1972, he died. By the time he built the theatre, he had lost his voice and his theatre company had shut down. It is only after he died that my dad bought these properties from the Bajaj family and rebuilt the theatre to fulfil his father’s wish. He not only bought it with his own money but also converted it into a trust to ensure it would always remain a theatre even in the future.

Do you get along with your sister Sanjana Kapoor?
What we have in our family is that we are all fiercely independent and have strong personalities. No one ever interferes with each other’s work but we are all there for each other and no one judges the other. Sanjana started by assisting me on making TV commercials and realised it did not interest her. While she was initially reluctant to run Prithvi, I encouraged her and then she grew and took up more and more responsibility. She is a lot more attractive than I am and is great fun. She worked hard and put her soul into running this theatre.

Your father has not been well for a couple of years. How is he now?
He is a recluse and warms up only when he sees his family and grandkids. He has difficulty speaking and so, does not talk much.

Has your father seen Kareena’s or Ranbir’s films?
After a decade, I took my dad in his wheelchair, along with the entire Prithvi staff to see Ranbir’s Rockstar last year. He had known Ranbir as a kid but had not registered him as a young man till then, even though he comes home every Christmas. My father usually does not speak much, but after seeing his film he said vociferously, ‘This boy is very good’.
